Web 1.5

Web 1.5 is all about keywords. Now we’ve got search engines, and we even start to see things like user feedback forms. But the search engines that care about keywords are really still tied to this Web 1.0 mindset.

And again, think about Burger King—or actually, let’s switch to McDonald’s, because it’s easier. McDonald’s is going to put in keywords like Chicken McNuggets, Big Mac, Quarter Pounder. Those keywords represent the site, even if those exact terms aren’t always the main focus on every page.

So yes, keywords matter. But notice why they matter. If I search for “python” because I’m looking for the programming language, I don’t necessarily know what I’m looking for yet. That’s different from searching for “Big Mac.” In that case, I already know the thing exists—I just can’t quite remember how to find it.

That’s really what keywords are doing in Web 1.5. They help match the “What’s the name of that thing?” type of search. You use keywords to connect people to things they already know exist, even if they don’t remember exactly how to get there.
