Overall, what we also need to recognize is the role of the social web—things like Wikipedia, wikis, blogs, and similar platforms. The key question here is: are we talking about a content publisher, where the website owner determines the content, or are we talking about a social forum, where the users themselves provide the content?
For now, we’re mostly going to talk about this as a foundation. Because if we jump straight to applications—say I have a calculator, or something that performs some other kind of computation or programming on a webpage—the question still becomes: how do people find it?
People don’t search for an application. They search for content. So whether or not you have a great application, you still need content so that people can find you and get to you in the first place.
That’s why we’re starting here. This content layer is the foundation everything else sits on.
